Adam Aron, the CEO of AMC – the largest chain of cinemas in the US – has slammed the current theatrical windows for film releases. During and after the COVID pandemic, we have seen more films available digitally within months or even weeks of their theatrical release, not exactly enticing movie viewers to go to theaters.
According to Deadline, Aron wants more films to appear in theaters longer. “In our opinion, 17 days or 30 days are too short, [en] this is a conversation that takes center stage, live…. We believe everyone would make more money if the windows were longer.” he said.
Aron also wants to see more streamers like Netflix show up in theaters with their biggest releases before they just end up on an app. “A general consensus has emerged in Hollywood – not by everyone, but by most – that the most successful movies on streaming platforms are the ones that go to theaters first, and those movies that have a great theatrical release often become the most watched movies on streaming services,” he said.
What do you think? Should movies be shown in theaters longer?
