Polish developer Virtual Alchemy has released the first free demo of Band of Crusaders released on Steam and GOG. With that, players will finally get a taste of this dark mix of medieval tactics, party management and apocalyptic fantasy. The game was already on the radar of nearly 100,000 wishlist users, and this demo should show just how ambitious this tactical sandbox really is.
In Band of Crusaders You step into the battered boots of a Grandmaster leading a knightly order against a demonic invasion bringing Europe to the brink of destruction. Short but intense battles determine your survival as you must fight for every step forward in a world filled with biblical demons, sacred artifacts such as the Spear of Longinus and ancient European legends. It soon becomes apparent that heroic char may sound good, but survival in this brutal sandbox is far more rewarding.
The battles are built on real-time tactics with pause via slow motion, allowing you to precisely position your group of knights, spearmen, archers and artificers. You can break enemy lines, flank or set clever traps, all while using one button to slow down time to make crucial decisions. Outside of battle, you manage your camp, upgrade buildings and keep your order in tip-top shape.
In addition, progression is fully customizable. Each warrior develops into a unique specialist thanks to a mosaic of skills and equipment. On the overworld, you’ll discover emergent storytelling, local quests and cults that respond to your choices, making no path feel the same.
Game Director Dominik Sypnicki emphasizes that the game leans on classics from the tactical RPG genre, but modernizes the combat system with a slow-motion layer that refines the pace and intensity. Since the collaboration with publisher NCSOFT was announced in 2024, the wishlist has tripled and is Band of Crusaders developed into a full, playable demo.
The free demo is now available through Steam and GOG.
