I thought there was no good alternative for my iPad keyboard, but it is just as good and cheaper by Logitech

Author Patrick worked on Logitech’s flip folio for about three weeks.

The accessories for Apple’s iPad Pro are sometimes sinfully expensive. The Magic Keyboard costs, for example, around 400 euros (RRP).

For the new flip folio from Logitech, on the other hand, half of the price is due. The alternative does a lot right, but there is at least one catch: you have to do without a comfortable touchpad.

This is exactly what works for me surprisingly well.

Logitech Flip Folio: An origami fun

Unsurprisingly, the manufacturer produces its iPad accessory very high quality, which is reflected in processing and design. In terms of material processing, however, the gadget is inferior to the Magic Keyboard. While Apple partly relies on aluminum in its keyboard, Logitech uses plastic.

The flip folio protects the iPad when it is folded off from scratches and light bumps. As with Apple’s model, however, not all edges are fully enclosed. For this, the Apple Pencil can easily find its usual place on the page.

At the first time it was opened, the process seemed like tedious folds of paper. In the meantime, however, the handles have been firmly transferred to the muscle storage:

• Fail the case once
• The rear part with little strength to a stand “bend”
• Place the iPad on the folio (unless already happened)
• Set up Bluetooth keyboard

Apropos Bluetooth: I was able to connect the keyboard to the iPad quickly and easily via the system settings. So far, after three weeks of intensive use, I have never fought with connection problems.

After work, the keyboard is optionally placed in the space provided for you to store the case compactly in the backpack. Like the case, the keyboard is covered by a plastic housing, which also ensures the low weight of 207 grams.

Logitech Flip Folio: The keyboard in the screaming day

Overall, the keyboard feels excellent. The push of a button is pretty crisp and quiet. When typing you feel a clear but not too hard resistance. When I write longer texts, the lack of backlight of the keyboard is potentially annoying.

The keyboard brings everything important to work – except for backlight.

However, the letters, digits and characters on the keyboard are printed bright enough, so that this fact only becomes a serious problem in a very dark environment. The additional function keys with which various actions on the iPad can be triggered with just one button are particularly gratifying.

• Call up emoji keyboard
• Create screenshot
• Tax music reproduction

Button batteries are required for the operation of the keyboard. You don’t have to buy at the start. According to the manufacturer, the exchange is only due about every two years. However, I cannot (yet) check this (yet).

Keyboard without touchpad: How good or bad is it?

As already described at the beginning, Logitich keyboard does not have a touchpad, which makes work more cumbersome on the go, but not impossible. Apart from that, a number of actions and navigation on the tablet are available with the help of keyboard shortcuts.

Not a must, but of course the missing touchpad is worthy of the mouse.

In addition, you can of course still control the iPad via touch or connect a mouse to the tablet. Ultimately, it remains a question of personal preference. Surprisingly, it works very well for me and I only missed a touchpad in a few places.

If you occasionally clamp the iPad on a monitorcan be an advantage and ensure a tidy desk. I recommend using a mouse so that working on the monitor feels more “more natural”. At least that’s how it happens to me.

My highlight: work in portrait format

Since the case is basically a stable base for the Apple iPad, the tablet can be easily placed on it in portrait format.

Before I knew the flip folio, I did not even think about using the iPad Pro in top edge format for work.

Depending on the activity, this can be a practical advantage, for example when writing, if I want to see more of the text. The scroll through websites also seems much clearer.

This bonus does not drastically change the way I work with the device, but I don’t like to do without this option.

The Logitech Flip folio suits you if you …

• … can do without a touchpad.
• … you mostly work on the tablet at home.
• … like to work in portrait format.
• … attaches great importance to a high -quality keyboard.
• … consider a keyboard backlight to be overwhelmed.

Possible alternatives to the Logitech Flip Folio

The most obvious alternative comes from Logitech himself. The manufacturer still has a keyboard with a touchpad. However, this solution is-at least for the Pro models-more expensive than the flip folio shown here.

The Magic Keyboard from Apple is unbeatable with regard to processing and hapticsbut also with regard to the amount of the price. With an RRP of 400 euros, you will transform the iPad Pro into a serious MacBook competitor who is also suitable for working on the go. Apple’s keyboard also has a backlight.

Probably the cheapest alternative is the combination of a simple iPad stand and any Bluetooth keyboard. For various online retailers, there are wooden feet made of wood or plastic for the iPad for less than 20 euros. Depending on the model, there is a Bluetooth keyboard for significantly less money than the two alternatives mentioned above. Of course, this tip is not suitable for working when traveling.

The price-performance ratio of the Logitech Flip folios is okay: With an RRP of 200 euros, the case is expensive and is primarily worthwhile for those who work a lot with the iPad (at home). In my opinion, the waiver of a touchpad is not a dealbreaker, provided you are aware of it. For this, the gadget brings a high -quality and slim keyboard that ensures joy at work.
