Detective Dotson is coming to the Nintendo Switch later this year. A cosy mystery with a hefty dose of flair, this colorful and quirky indie hit from India has won awards and been loved by fans worldwide. Developer Masala Games and the stylish Japanese publisher Rainy Frog (known for the likes of Piczle) are now also bringing the game to a new audience.
Dotson himself had never actually wanted to become a detective. He dreamed of spotlights and movie sets, but when his father – a true sleuth – was mysteriously killed, Dotson traded in his Bollywood ambitions for a magnifying glass and a heavy dose of glitter. What follows is a mix of dance numbers, madcap chases and mystery in the chaotic charm of an Indian provincial town.
As a player, you solve four interconnected cases, each with an absurd twist. Think pink-painted dogs, missing jewelry and gangsters who like bargain shopping a little too much. The search for answers brings you ever closer to the truth behind the fate of Dotson’s father.
Along the way, you’ll talk to meddling local residents, browse colorful environments and connect clues on a “clue board” that looks like it was made for a school project – including glitter and flair.
The visual style mixes retro 2D pixel characters with atmospheric 3D backgrounds full of markets, dusty roads, rooftop cricket and Holi festival colors. Everything is accompanied by an original soundtrack that seems straight out of a Bollywood movie, perfect for swaying along while walking and tracking.
Detective Dotson is expected this year on the Nintendo Switch. Those ready for a dose of mystery with masala should definitely not miss this game.
