Skype is officially dead –

After 22 years of bringing us closer to distant friends, relatives and more, Skype has officially ended. The decision to end Skype was announced earlier this year and now the communications service is gone for good.

If you go to the Skype website now, you are greeted with a message revealing that the service is indeed gone and that if you want a Microsoft communication method, you must sign up for Teams. You can exchange all your contacts and data quite easily if you want to keep your account settings from Skype.

While TeamSpeak and Discord offered gamers alternatives to Skype in the 2010s, it felt like the real death blow to the service came in the pandemic, when despite offering the same features as Zoom, Teams and more, it seemed like everyone ignored Skype after it had been by our side for decades.

With so many competitors available, both for gamers and those who use video and voice calls for work, it just seemed like Skype was struggling to keep its head above water. The unique selling point was no longer so unique, and despite continuing, the best years were far behind us as we reached the 2020s.
