Huge British VFX group Technicolour collapses -.

VFX group Technicolour has gone bankrupt in the United Kingdom after trying to find buyers and failing to find any. The group was responsible for work on decades of animated films, including 1940’s Pinocchio and 2024’s Mufasa: The Lion King.

The group owned studios in the United Kingdom, the U.S., Canada and India, and the majority of the more than 440 people it employed will be laid off, according to the BBC. “The economic headwinds affecting companies across the creative industries have proved too challenging to overcome, leading to Technicolor’s UK operations being put into receivership today.” says Nick Holloway, the company’s co-manager.

Technicolour was founded back in 1915 and despite being around for more than 100 years, the group was still working on modern blockbusters last year, including Kraven the Hunter, Young Woman and the Sea and Emilia Perez.

This is a huge blow to the VFX industry, which feels more crucial than ever in many modern films. But slow and inconsistent work can mean the death of any company, even a historic one like Technicolour.
