August with a blue moon –

If you’ve ever wondered where the expression ” once in a blue moon” comes from or what it means, it is essentially in reference to the rare lunar phenomena in which two supermoons occur within one month. A supermoon occurs when the moon is at its closest point to Earth, making it appear about 14% larger and 30% brighter, and for August we expect to get two, which makes for a blue moon.

Sky News notes that there is expected to be the first supermoon on the evening of Aug. 1 (so … tomorrow), and then the second is expected for Aug. 30.

While it may seem like a fairly common lunar phenomenon as the last one happened in 2018, we won’t actually see another blue moon until 2037, so maybe take some time tomorrow to appreciate our ally in orbit.
