On August 1, 2016, Danny Duffy broke a nearly seven year old franchise record by striking out 16 in Tampa Bay to help the Royals defeat the Rays 3-0. In the second inning, Duffy struck out the side by fanning Steven Souza, Jr., Desmond Jennings and Kevin Kiermaier. Duffy carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning when left fielder Jennings hit a double into left field for the Rays' only hit of the game.
Duffy would leave the game after eight innings while Kelvin Herrera go the save by pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Duffy gave up only one walk in the second inning to Logan Forsythe on a full count. In all, Duffy had one of the greatest single-game pitching performances in Royals history.
The previous record was held by Zack Greinke when, n August 25, 2009, he set the Royals record for the most strikeouts in a game with 15 against the Cleveland Indians. During the home game, Greinke struck out six of the starting line up. In the fifth inning, Greinke struck out all three batters on 12 pitches.
The Royals went on to win the game by the score of 5-2. Greinke would go on to win the 2009 American League Cy Young Award.
