Duffy carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning when left fielder Jennings hit a double into left field for the Rays' only hit of the game.

Duffy would leave the game after eight innings while Kelvin Herrera go the save by pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Duffy gave up only one walk in the second inning to Logan Forsythe on a full count. In all, Duffy had one of the greatest single-game pitching performances in Royals history.

The previous record was held by Zack Greinke when, n August 25, 2009, he set the Royals record for the most strikeouts in a game with 15 against the Cleveland Indians. During the home game, Greinke struck out six of the starting line up. In the fifth inning, Greinke struck out all three batters on 12 pitches.
