Royals Fall to Kershaw

Tonight’s broadcast on Fox Sports Kansas City started off with some tears from both Ryan Lefebvre and Rex Hudler, but for good reasons. US Air Force Major, Robert Sides came home from a year long deployment, and surprised his son, Austin, who threw out the first pitch on Tuesday night for his 11th birthday. Thank you for your service, Major. Glad you’re back safe.

Onto the game.

You wanted a pitching matchup, and that’s exactly what we got. Unfortunately, the Royals were on the losing end of it.

The first run of the night would come in the first due to a Justin Turner leadoff triple. The second run for the Dodgers would come in the ninth inning against Kelvin Hererra on a single up the middle from Andre Ethier to score Adrian Gonzalez.

That would be all of the scoring that would happen tonight, as Duffy would completely shut down the Dodgers offense for the rest of his start. Duffy threw six innings while allowing one earned run, and scattering four hits. Duffy now leads the team in ERA as he lowered his to 2.69.

Clayton Kershaw was nothing short of spectacular. His no-hitter ended with one out in the first inning off the bat of none other than Eric Hosmer. Kershaw would only scatter six hits, and strikeout eight over eight scoreless innings.

Clayton Kershaw is the fourth former Cy Young award winner that the Royals have faced in the last nine days. The Royals were able to bat around the other three guys, but there was no such luck against Kershaw tonight.

Tomorrow we will send our ‘ace’ to the mound the face Dan Haren. James Shields has disappointed in the month of June. His last good start was on June 8th when he threw six innings of one (unearned) run baseball. Shields has given up five runs in two of his four June starts this year. After last night’s amazing performance by Jeremy Guthrie, Shields now owns the highest ERA on the team.

Ryan’s shirt will look to redeem itself tomorrow night, to get the Royals a series win. For tonight, I will go ahead and excuse the Royals lack of offense tonight, but hopefully the Royals offense that we saw during that 10-game winning streak.
